About Me

Welcome. My name is Maqshuda (Maq for short).

I am a flight and trauma nurse, with over 30 years of experience, spanning emergency rooms in South Africa and the Netherlands, and planes and helicopters over elsewhere in Africa and Europe.

Today, I focus more on driving change at an organisational and systems level; I connect healthcare professionals, businesses, and non-profits, and helping them solve problems.

My recent collaborations include the South African Snakebite Symposium (SASS), which I co-founded, and the Italian-based IntubatiEm, where I work on HITTER (High-Intensity Trauma Training for Emergency Responders), an annual advanced trauma management course widely recognised as one of Europe’s premier trauma training experiences.

I’m always looking to expand my network and explore new opportunities, so, reach out.

Recent Projects

South African Snakebite Symposium

Driven by my love of wildlife and a pressing need in rural South Africa, I co-founded SASS with my dear friend and colleague Thea Litschka-Koen. She is the founder of the Eswatini Antivenom Foundation and member of the WHO Snakebite Panel of Experts.

After securing funding from the private and public sector, as well as academic support, I organised the inaugural event in 2022. It has been held annually ever since.

As part of the event, we introduced Snakebite Flipper Cards; portable booklets that provide comprehensive snakebite information for healthcare kits in rural areas, where speed and accuracy are critical, and beyond. Images of the flipper cards and details about the 2022 event’s programme can be found here.

I contributed to two academic articles which explored our treatment approach in using the flipper cards. These articles were published in the South African Medical Journal and can be found here, and here, respectively.

HITTER with IntubatiEm

Since 202X I have been a member of the team at IntubatiEm, an Italian-based company that provides training in emergency medicine, anaesthesia, and intensive care.

Specifically, I have been involved in developing the curriculum for, and organising the actual event of, HITTER, or High-Intensity Trauma Training for Emergency Responders.

HITTER is an annual, three-day advanced trauma management course held in Rome. It features realistic and immersive high-stakes emergency scenarios and advanced airway management situations.

The training is facilitated by an international team of trauma experts, myself included, from South Africa, Australia, Italy, the USA, and the UK. HITTER is officially accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Outdoor and Plant Medicine and Wildlife

My adoration of the outdoors and anything that walks on four legs* has driven me into conservation.

As such, I have been involved in several wildlife initiatives in Southern Africa involving rhinos, big cats, and, of course, reptiles.

Being based in South Africa means that I am blessed with access to an abundance of opportunities in nature and with animals. I have made use of this by receiving specialised training in outdoor and plant medicine.

*Or as you have seen in the case of snakes, no legs. In fact, as a former African Grey Parrot mom, two-legged creatures are also fantastic. And before my two adult children claim neglect, raising homo sapiens wasn’t too bad either.

Day-To-Day Activities

At present, I am based in Mozambique, working with *** insert employer *** at the EU’s military mission in Maputo

I also still work hands-on at emergency departments back in South Africa.
